When you know better – you do better! My name is Sheri Tacker. I created this site, Reading Made FUN! to help parents find answers to the frustration of not knowing how to help their child learn to read. I want to share FUN ideas that work for teaching your little ones to read.
My journey to becoming a Dyslexia Therapist began as my frustration grew while I was working as a Resource Teacher. I was “teaching” 6th and 7th grade students who could not read much above a 3rd grade reading level. My only response due to my scewed education of whole language and balanced literacy training was limited to saying “Just Read More”!
Which makes me both angry and sad at the same time, because that is utterly ridiculous! I felt helpless and had very few tools in my teacher toolbox.
Thankfully, I met K.O. and her family. They introduced me to the topic of “Dyslexia”. I visited her “Saturday School” and was blown away. I began seeking an avenue to learn more and become equipped to teach – really truly honestly teach – my students how to read.
I soon found and attended a training course with the The Apple Group in Jonesboro, Arkansas. That week long training was AMAZING and led to further study to become fully Certified as a Dyslexia Therapist. I immediately began using my new skills and knowledge to benefit my students at school and in private tutoring.
Later, I was privileged to attend Take Flight training from the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital. I now feel highly equipped and blessed to teach dyslexic students or any student struggling with foundational reading skills how to master the needed skills for reading.
I want to share the love of reading by simplifying the steps to learning foundational skills for decoding words in order to lead to beautiful understanding of the imaginative and informative things written on a page or in a book.
Every one has a right to read – allow me to help you on that road to discovery.
I went from not knowing how to teach the foundational skills of reading to fully understanding the process of reading in our brain and strategies to train the brain to read. Reading is a taught skill – it doesn’t just happen like we learn to talk.
